Impact Las Vegas Awards $50,000 2019 Grant to Eye Care 4 Kids

LAS VEGAS, NV –June 4, 2019 – The members of Impact Las Vegas, a Nevada nonprofit women’s collective giving organization in its sixth grant year, voted on Saturday, June 1st to award their $50,0000 grant to Eye Care 4 Kids.

Eye Care 4 Kids provides comprehensive vision care services, including:  vision screenings and exams and the production, fitting and delivery of eyeglasses to children in Clark County School District at little to no charge.  Approximately one in four children need some type of corrective eyewear.  However, the need soars for economically challenged communities, where 30-50 percent of children go without necessary professional eyecare services.  In Southern Nevada, thousands of school-age children are not receiving vision care because they are uninsured or simply cannot afford professional eyecare.  Research shows that if a low-income student cannot read by third grade, they are four times less likely to graduate on time.

In the 2017-2018 academic school year, Eye Care 4 Kids provided vision services to just under 11,000 Clark County School District students.  Of those students, approximately 8,100 were supplied with eyeglasses.  Eye Care 4 Kids receive calls and emails on a weekly basis from parent and school representatives inquiring about an affordable way to assist their child/student to obtain replacement corrective eyeglasses who desperately need them when they become broken or lost.

With a $50,000 grant from Impact Las Vegas, Eye Care 4 Kids will be able to create the Patient Eyeglass Replacement Fund (PERF) to assist students with their visual needs.  This is a brand-new program.

According to Founder and President Maureen Romito, the 2019 grant award of $50,000 represents the combined giving from fifty Impact Las Vegas Members. “In our collective giving model, “ she explained, “each woman’s individual membership donation is pooled so that we can make a bigger difference and have a more significant impact with our charitable giving than any of us could do alone.”

In February 2019, Impact Las Vegas received grant letters of inquiry from 83 Southern Nevada nonprofits. Members then narrowed the field to 16 organizations who submitted full grant applications. In April, Member volunteers scored and evaluated these applications, choosing four semi-finalists for site visits in May.

Two Finalists made short presentations to all Impact Las Vegas Members on Saturday, June 1st where each member voted and chose the organization's sixth-ever grant recipient.

“It was an incredibly difficult decision for our 50 Members,” said Ms. Romito. “But when the Impact Las Vegas ' grant was announced each of us witnessed, first-hand, the power of women connecting, giving as one.”

Stephanie Kirby, Executive Director, agreed, “Eye Care 4 Kids is honored to have been selected to partner with Impact Las Vegas, investing in the future of our city by investing in our students!  Our mission is to provide professional eyecare to low income, visually impaired children and underserved families. If a child can’t see and can’t read, he or she can’t learn. More often than not, families can’t afford the cost to replace their child’s glasses if they become lost or broken, and further, many families have more than one child who benefits from the vision services provided by Eye Care 4 Kids.  Thank you to the Members of Impact Las Vegas for helping us create this program!”
